Walk & Talk Therapy for Black Women & Men

Walk & Talk therapy helps reduce stress and body tension, while improving circulation, breathing, and clearing the mind of intrusive negative thoughts. Walk & Talk sessions can help you reduce anxiety, improve mood, improve sleep and more.

For some people sitting within the confines of a therapy room can be restricting and uncomfortable, leading many to feel inhibited and unable to thrive in a therapeutic setting.  For this reason something called ‘Walk & Talk‘ therapy is a modern approach to therapy for people that has proven positive outcomes and can achieve great results in terms of getting to the core of the issue.

Walk & Talk therapy is precisely as it sounds, it’s a full and complete therapy session outdoors in green spaces with fresh air, where we walk or simply sit down at a park bench – and talk.  As opposed to sitting in a sometimes confining office, being outdoors and physically moving increases circulation and blood flow to the brain, boosting cognitive performance – all which is helpful in confronting and overcoming difficult issues.

Walking and talking in a safe space, enables you and me to develop a strong working alliance, which can accelerate manifesting the confidence, skills and the tools to develop the awareness to identify and work through your underlying issues. Walking and talking enhances your ability to recognize your resilience, gain a broader understanding of your own life and find ways to communicate feelings that surface. Both spending time outdoors in green spaces and exercising have been proven to reduce symptoms associated with stress, anxiety,  depression, and an improved mood.

How Walk & Talk Therapy Works

The first session takes place face to face at my office or online wherever you have an internet connection. This will entail our initial consultation, we’ll get to know each other, discuss how Walk & Talk therapy works, and come to some agreement on objectives and goals in working together.   We’ll then discuss what you would like to explore in a walk.

Walk & Talk has been used successfully for teenagers and adults, those who are more introvert, those that find it difficult to sit still for a length of time, or those who are easily distracted, or struggling with anxiety, bereavement, bullying, depression, divorce, stress, work pressure or a traumatic event.

The Benefits of Walk & Talk Therapy

  • Young people and adults see some immediate beneficial results, as they are instantly doing something.
  • This is a non-confrontational setting, it is both natural and more relaxing to be outdoors than inside a therapy room and you set the pace.
  • It does not require a huge amount of eye contact and can be more comfortable and empowering for self-exploration and expression – to walk side by side with me. Research has shown some people find direct eye contact discomforting and anxiety producing (when they are the focus of a traditional therapy session).
  • Sometimes my job in the traditional office is to sit in silence allowing you to collect your thoughts and lead the conversation.  For many it’s less pressuring and is far easier to collect your thoughts when outdoors in the open space.
  • Outdoors and open space enables you to think clearly and creatively about your problems. Allowing you to collect and express your thoughts quicker.
  • Walking improves your health, energy levels, allowing for better sleep and more energy during the day.

People of all ages and from all walks of life participate in Walk & Talk Therapy. Perhaps you want to explore this type of counseling for the benefits from connecting with nature, getting light exercise, and freeing up your thought and contemplation process through movement.   Walk & Talk sessions can be used  regularly or intermittently or even be discontinued at any time – whatever you prefer.   However before we get too far ahead of ourselves here, if this sounds interesting to you, let’s have a conversation, call me for a free discovery call and I would be happy to share more insight on Walk & Talk Therapy.

“nature walks appear to have a special impact on our physical and emotional well-being.  When people walk in natural settings, they show greater evidence of stress relief. They experience lower cortisol levels. They also experience temporary reductions in blood pressure and heart rate variability” –  (Source).
